Althorne TQ 90573 97448
The grid reference above is for the closable flood gate in the defence wall. On arriving at Althorne look for the road going South from the main road signed for the railway station. Proceed over the level crossing ( no barriers care! ) and continue straight ahead down to the end of the road. The flood gate is in front of you.The 10m contour is approximately where the railway station is situated should you need to make a dash for it! Take the Southend Road from Chelmsford and turn off the dual carraigeway at the Wickford exit. At the roundabouts follow the signs for South Woodham Ferrers. You will arrive on the A132 which is the red road at the extreme left of the map. Follow the B1012 until you see the Althorne Railway Station Sign.

Above is an image of the private road, down which you approach. The flood gates are at the end you see.

Above a closer look. The flood gates are in front of the yacht to the right of the lamp post.

Above a view down stream from the flood gates. They should be shut, but if not you might need a broom.
