Maldon Bypass Bridge     TL 84266 07173

You can approach the Western bypass for Maldon off the A12 then through Hatfield Peveral leaving by B1018 or from Chelmsford through Danbury using the A414. When using the later take the first exit when you get to the Morrison's roundabout, then 1st exit at the next roundabout. The parking is on the left just after you pass under a bridge. If you end up the wrong side of the road it is easiest to go to the next roundabout and come back on the correct side, (travelling S to N ) as the road is busy, wide and fast and you have restricted visibility if crossing from E to W. In the photo below the layby is shown with the car with headlights being on the bridge. If coming from Hatfield Peveral take the first 2nd exit at the first roundabout after Ulting. Drive to the next roundabout and come back on the other side of the road, the layby is on the left just after a bridge.

Walk towards the bridge and after a few metres you will find a public footpath the layby side of the road going up some steps. In the phot below you can see the front of the same lorry that you can see the back of in the previous photo. Go up the steps towars the pylon.

At the top of the steps turn right as shown in the photo below:-

The path drops rapidly towards the river and arrives under the bridge shown below. This has two advantages, firstly if the water rises quickly retreating up the path lets you gain height rapidly. If the weather is foul you are fairly well sheltered beneath the bridge. It is no good observing atop the bridge as the water is too far away to judge in the dark and the traffic is dabgerously near.
